Schioppettino Friuli Colli Orientalione is also known as Ribolla Nera and is one of the most ancient native vines in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
If you have never heard of it that’s because it is extremely rare and in fact, nearly went extinct. We are pretty glad it didn’t because it produces some excellent wine. If I was to try and put it in a more familiar context I would say it sits somewhere between a Rhone style Syrah and Cabernet Franc.
When you first open the bottle it’s an explosion of aromas. To the point where it’s almost overwhelming. I would definitely recommend giving this a bit of time in a decanter and you will be rewarded with bright cherries and raspberries interwoven with spice, fresh cracked white pepper and pretty violet floral aromas. Overall, a super interesting wine that only gets more interesting with time in the glass. If you are a fan of spicy reds and have never tried a Schioppetino before this may be the one for you.
The taste is warm, full bodied and round with excellent intensity and a long finish. Zorzettig focuses on native varietals to promote and celebrate their terroir, and implement full bio-organic practices.
