Esquilache Blanco Navarra

Esquilache Viura

***SOLD OUT*** please email if you would like to be alerted to new stock

Viura, also known as Macabeo, is native to Spain and is one of their major varieties. This one is fresh, crisp and very aromatic. I normally tell people it's like a more interesting Sauvignon Blanc.

This has nothing to do with the wine but I was researching the meaning of the word Esquilache and found out that it is named after a guy called Esquilache who started something called the Esquilache Riots. In 1766, Leopoldo de Gregorio, Marquis of Esquilache who was a minister during the rule of Charles III of Spain, had a plan to terminate the wearing of long capes and broad-brimmed hats. This caused a riot! In the end Esquilache was sent to Venice to be the ambassador and they eventually convinced the populace to adopt the French-style short capes and three-cornered hat by comparing their old garb to the hangman who evidently wasn't very fashionable.

Anyway, if you are sick of Sauvignon Blanc but still want something crisp refreshing that smells and tastes very delicious this is for you.
